A If your heat pump is low on refrigerant, it won’t be able to put out much heat at all. This will mean that the auxiliary heat will be doing most of the heating. The auxiliary heat cost approximately 3 times as much per unit of heat as the heat pump does. You may not notice the problem until your hi electric bill arrives after the first cold month of the heating season. If the unit is approaching 10 years in age and needs the replacement of a major components such as the compressor, reversing valve, indoor or outdoor coil, it would be advisable to replace instead of fix. Most new heat pumps come with a 10 year part warranty covering the whole machine. Repair warranties only cover the part that was replaced.
